2018 Color of the Year

Pantone’s Color Institute has chosen Ultra Violet (Pantone 18-3838) as the 2018 Color of the Year. Each year, the company announces a “Color of the Year” that is meant to be “a reflection of what’s needed in our world today” and to “provide strategic direction for the world of trend and design”.

According to Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of Pantone’s Color Institute, Ultra Violet is a creative inspiration that “takes our awareness and potential to a higher level.” Emphasizing artistic expression and spiritual reflection, this blue-based purple is a symbol of mystery, intrigue, and discovery, as it resembles the night sky and its endless and limitless possibilities. Having been historically linked to musical icons such as David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, and Prince, the bright purple also represents unconventionality, individuality, experimentation, and imagination.

You can definitely be expecting to see a lot of Ultra Violet this year, not only in fashion, but also in beauty, graphic designs, and product applications. Already, Butter London announced a collaboration with Pantone to feature a collection of Ultra Violet-coloured lipsticks, nail polishes, eyeshadows, and eyeliners.

Pantone released a Fashion Color Report in conjunction with New York Fashion Week announcing 9 other top colours for Spring 2018 fashion. In addition to Ultra Violet, these bright colours evoke fun and playfulness, and allow for more unique and dramatic colour combinations compared to classic Spring shades.  Here is the Spring colour palette you can expect to see in NYFW and other global shows, as well as fashion retailers this year :
